Section 1
Centella asiatica is a botanical species used traditionally in several Asian medical systems. In contemporary skincare, 'cica' is commonly used as a consumer-friendly label for Centella-derived ingredients.
The plant contains multiple bioactive constituents, especially triterpenoid compounds such as asiaticoside, madecassoside, asiatic acid and madecassic acid.
A whole-plant extract is not chemically identical to an isolated madecassoside ingredient or a standardised triterpene fraction. This distinction matters when interpreting clinical evidence.

One human study evaluated cosmetic creams and hydrogels containing Centella asiatica extract over four weeks in 25 volunteers. The formulations, particularly those containing the higher tested extract level, improved stratum-corneum hydration and reduced transepidermal water loss.
A separate double-blind clinical study in Indonesian batik workers with dry skin found improvements in skin hydration measures following Centella cream use over four weeks.
These studies support Centella's role in hydration and barrier-focused formulas, but neither proves that every Centella product will produce the same magnitude of benefit.
Section 3
Skin-barrier performance is commonly assessed using measures such as stratum-corneum hydration and transepidermal water loss. Centella-containing formulations have shown favourable changes in these parameters in several human studies.
The biological rationale is broader than simple humectancy. Mechanistic research on Centella constituents has explored inflammatory mediators, fibroblast activity, extracellular-matrix signalling and tissue-remodelling pathways.
However, a cosmetic statement such as 'supports the skin barrier' is more defensible than saying Centella 'repairs a damaged barrier', because repair implies a therapeutic outcome that requires stronger product-specific evidence.
Section 4
Centella's soothing reputation is partly based on laboratory evidence involving inflammatory pathways and partly on human studies of formulations used in dry, irritated or sensitive skin.
Recent observational data on a multi-ingredient facial cream containing Centella leaf extract, ceramide and panthenol reported reductions in sensitive-skin symptoms and improvements in hydration and transepidermal water loss.
Because the tested formula contained multiple barrier-support ingredients and lacked an isolated Centella control, the results cannot be attributed to Centella alone.
Section 5
Centella's triterpenoids have been investigated in fibroblast and wound-healing models, where effects on collagen-related pathways have been reported. This is one reason the ingredient is frequently marketed for anti-ageing.
Human evidence is more nuanced. A systematic review and network meta-analysis of five double-blind randomized trials involving 172 Asian women found possible improvements in lip and periocular wrinkles and increased hydration, but also noted weak reporting and poor extract standardisation.
Another randomized study using a combination of vitamin C and madecassoside reported improvements in wrinkles, firmness, roughness and hydration over six months. Because the product combined two actives, the results cannot establish the independent effect of madecassoside.
Section 6
Centella has a substantial wound-healing research history. A systematic review identified four clinical trials and reported potential benefits across wound contraction, granulation, re-epithelialisation and wound appearance.
Those findings are relevant to understanding the plant's biology, but wound care is not the same use case as everyday cosmetic skincare.
Likewise, there is not enough evidence to present a typical Centella cosmetic as an acne treatment or scar treatment. A soothing or barrier-support role should not be confused with treating the underlying medical condition.
Section 7
The comparison is not particularly useful because the ingredients have different evidence profiles and can serve complementary roles.
Niacinamide has broad human cosmetic evidence across barrier function, tone and visible ageing. Centella contributes botanical triterpenoids with hydration, barrier-support, soothing and wound-healing research behind them.
A well-designed formula may use both rather than choose one as a replacement for the other. Direct head-to-head evidence is insufficient to claim that Centella is superior to niacinamide or vice versa.
Section 8
Centella does not require darkness to function. Its value in a nighttime formula comes from the kind of support many people want after a full day of cleansing, climate exposure, air conditioning, sweat and friction.
Hydration, barrier comfort and a calmer skin feel are rational overnight objectives, especially when Centella is combined with complementary ingredients such as ectoin, niacinamide, panthenol and selected peptides.
The evidence-led conclusion is therefore practical rather than dramatic: Centella can be a useful supporting active in an overnight formula, provided the finished product does not claim more than its own evidence establishes.
