SPF belongs to the tested finished product, not to the words cream, gel or spray. Each format can be formulated to deliver high or moderate SPF and UVA protection.

What the format can influence is how the product spreads, dries, forms a film and feels on the skin. Those characteristics affect how much people use and how evenly they apply it.

This distinction matters because a theoretically excellent formula will underperform in real life if too little product reaches large parts of the skin.

Creams and lotions are among the most established sunscreen vehicles. They can create continuous films and easily accommodate moisturisers, emollients and additional skincare ingredients.

Sprays can make application faster and can help with areas that are awkward to reach. Their practical advantage is convenience rather than inherently stronger protection.

Application studies show that the amount of sunscreen reaching the skin varies by delivery method. In one study, users deposited different average amounts with lotions, sprays and sticks, showing that format changes application behaviour.

Indian guidance notes that conventional sprays may distribute unevenly and generally require manual spreading for even application. For a face mist, directions such as 'mist and pat evenly' are therefore not a cosmetic extra—they are part of achieving uniform coverage.

India does not have one climate. Delhi's dry summer heat, Mumbai's humidity and Bengaluru's milder conditions can create very different preferences for the same skin type.

Current Indian guidance recommends matching the vehicle to skin type, climate and cosmetic preference rather than prescribing one format to everyone.

This is why gel formulas may appeal in humid weather, richer creams may suit dry skin or air-conditioned environments, and lightweight fluid or mist formats may suit consumers who want less routine friction.

Oily or acne-prone skin often prefers oil-free gels, aqueous lotions or light formulations that reduce the feeling of shine and heaviness.
